August Bank Holiday: pony, ferrets and dogs

28 08 2011

We’re having a lovely bank holiday weekend. We sorted out loads of stuff to go on eBay and then spent this afternoon out with the pony, riding and doing field maintenance.

We didn’t take the dogs out to the pony with us today as Shadow’s in season. There’s a bit of a power struggle going on with the dogs at the moment. Shadow is now considerably bigger than JJ and wants to be top dog. Although he was here first, he never stood up to her when she was a puppy and has let her walk all over him. Over the past week, though, she’s really started to try to assert her dominance and he’s started to get a bit annoyed. I really don’t know whether he’ll put her in her place or just ignore her though, so watch this space.

I’ve got the ferrets running round the living room at the moment. They are getting much better about biting now and we have now been able to clip their claws. They’ve had great fun playing with a bowl of water this week, jumping in it and over it and wrestling in and around it, so we’re going to let them have a little play in the bath at some point.

Ferrets

20 08 2011

We got two young ferrets last weekend. They are 11-week-old sisters, one silver and one polecat. The silver is called Ferret and the polecat is called Weasel. We did intend to name them both but Ferret kind of stuck. They are really friendly, jolly little souls, if a little boisterous. They’ve got both the cats and both the dogs, a Lab and a Collie x Lab, healthily respectful of them. They torment the dogs terribly when they’re out.

The other night, I was sitting on the sofa and Ferret came running along the back of the sofa, climbed onto my head, leant too far and fell off into my bowl of pasta!

They have discovered all kinds of hiding places, the sofa being a particular favourite.

Seed head caught on horse hair

6 08 2011

We found this seed head caught on a horse hair, stuck in the edge of the field shelter doorway.

Photos of moths, wasps and ladybirds

3 08 2011

Here are a few from today. There were 7 ladybirds on the same piece of fence, along with the wasp. The other night, we could hear the wasps chewing at the wood. The moth was on a glass door. I kind of like the way the picture came out with the reflection in the door.

Sherlock Holmes and Agatha Christie

28 07 2011

I am actually rather enjoying the Sherlock series running on the BBC at the moment. They’ve done quite a good job of updating it, but the spirit of it is quite true to the original. Good fun.

I’ve been reading an Agatha Christie, The Secret Adversary, on my phone. There are some really quite amazingly racist, sexist and classist statements in it. Seeing how mainstream views like that were so recently does serve to remind how far we’ve comein a relatively short time. Still a good way to go, of course, but there’s always room for improvement in everything.

I’ve been playing round a bit with a few of the apps I downloaded the other day. I cropped and tweaked this picture in Photoshop Express.

Weekend in pictures

26 06 2011

We’ve had a bit of garden waste kicking about for a while, waiting for the opportunity to burn it. We wanted to burn it on the herb/veg bed so we could dig the ash in. Friday night turned out to provide the ideal opportunity. I’d been hoping the 24th might be a possibility and, as it turned out, it was raining a bit as it came in dark, so no one was sitting out in their garden or had washing out. The wood was really dry, so went up very quickly and didn’t burn for too long. We went out and sat under a tree with the two dogs and one of the cats and watched the fire – it was great.

Last night, I made these Chocolate and Peanut Butter Squares. They are milk chocolate and double cream on top and white chocolate and peanut butter underneath. I left them in the fridge overnight and they were still a bit sticky this morning, although they had set enough to hold their shape. Next time, I’ll use less cream and peanut butter and hopefully that will make them set a bit harder. They taste great, though 🙂

This morning, I discovered that Candy had tidied herself neatly away in the larder.

It’s been really hot today, so I took a few pictures while I was out this afternoon. I don’t have a camera – I just use my mobile phone, so they’re not great quality and I’ve not a lot of settings I can change on the camera, but I like playing about with it nonetheless 🙂
